COVID-19 RENTAL SUPPORT. STRING PROBLEMS.

bad+string+cartoon.jpg

During the school closures, self-quarantines and just wanting to apply an abundance of caution, many of us do not want to come into public spaces. But our instruments still need service! Vermont Violins can help keep you playing without leaving home. Many of the visits we get in our shop are to take care of things we can take care of remotely.

Broke a string? We can help! A lot of people are very intimidated by the process of string changing but the truth is you do not need any superpowers to do it yourself. It’s really easy! But we will show you how and can do it remotely, using skype or facetime. We will even put up a quick video you can watch!

Complete this form and we’ll mail the string you need right off!

We don’t ask for credit cards on these forms. If you are a rental client, we will use the card on file and charge for the string only (Rental Clients get free postage on most orders). If you’re not currently renting from us, we’ll give you a call for payment information.

How To Replace a String….

People are often intimidated by having to change a string….they needn’t be. You can’t really hurt anything in the process — so don’t worry! Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. First, if you are changing the whole set, you will do so one string at a time. Never take off all the strings together! Just take one off, put one on, take one off, put one on….

  2. Take off the old string.

  3. Take the new string out of any packaging. One end has a loop or ball on it, the other end doesn’t. The loop/ball end will go in the tailpiece; the other end goes in the peg.

  4. The peg has a small hole in it—turn the peg so the hole is facing you. Insert the peg-end of the string into the hole until it just pokes out the other side of the peg.

  5. Turn the peg away from you (clockwise) about a half turn.

  6. As you continue to wind the string onto the peg, you want to keep tension on the string. With a little tension, the string will wind on nicely to the peg without overlapping. If it overlaps, just unwind a little and try again.

  7. When the felt (color winding) is past the nut, attach the other end of the string into the tailpiece. Don’t release the tension on the string (if you do, the peg will get a little messed up—go back, unwind and rewind with tension).

  8. Finish winding the string on. Check to be sure the string is in the notch on the bridge and the notch in the ebony nut (close to the pegbox).

  9. Bring her up to pitch and VOILA! done. You’re a pro!
